Abstract

Global energy demand will almost certainly increase, supported by population growth and an even more global, and active economy than exists today. The mixture of fuels needed to satisfy this demand is however in flux, and the actual formula will depend heavily on the degree of collective action by policy makers and consumers. The International Energy Agency (IEA) addresses this uncertainty by calculating multiple scenarios in which demand related assumptions are varied. This presentation includes a review of energy supply and demand from all major fuels to the year 2040 under the New Policies Scenario (IEA’s central case), and also under the 450 Scenario. In the latter, regulation is enacted to reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses to a level that limits warming. The investment needed for oil and gas in both cases is large, but differences in geography and objective could be significant.
